History

An Entrepreneurial Beginning
T.R. Coughlan started a masonry career in Ireland, working with mortar and limestone. Later, after he immigrated to Canada and worked building railway bridges, T.R. heard about dolomitic limestone deposits in the Minnesota River Valley. In 1885 T.R. arrived in Mankato, Minnesota to strike his claim. He found a site that had three distinct veins of dolomite, offering a variety of warm colors. In the early days Mankato Kasota stone was used as builder’s stone, dimension stone, sidewalk pavers, curbs and bridges.

Family Owned
The Coughlan family has owned Mankato Kasota stone ever since T.R. founded the company in 1885. From early 1970 – early 1980’s, the Coughlan family leased the property. In 1983, Robert and James Coughlan purchased the property from their father and took the next year to recondition and update all equipment – opening the quarry back up for operation in 1984. Since then, the brothers have been diligent to stay on top of the industry and have state of the art equipment for their quarries and manufacturing facility. Throughout the years the Coughlan family has been dedicated to technical excellence, ingenuity, personal service, on-time delivery, and dependable pricing. In addition to Mankato Kasota, the Coughlan family also founded Coughlan Publishing.

Future Focused
While Mankato Kasota stone has a proud past, we focus on the future. In recent years we have added thin and full stone veneers for home accents and coverings, and every day Mankato Kasota Stone works with customers to develop custom applications for our limestone. The distinctive elegance and ageless nature of our stone is only matched by the unlimited applications.
